Crowfield Curse : Book Review

The Crowfield Curse is a historical mystery written by Pat Walsh, that was set during 1347.

It starts off as William; an orphaned boy that living with the monks at Crowfiled Abbey, was sent to the forest to gather firewood (as he always did). Suddenly he hears something or someone crying out in pain and cautiously looked around the forest to see what or who it was. Will came upon a creature neither animal nor human, something he has never seen before. It was a hob, and it was trapped and wounded. Will was afraid, but took care of the hob.

Soon, Will came to know that the hob knew a horrible, dark secret. That somewhere just beyond the graveyard, there was something buried deep within the snow. As Will became curious and started getting to know the details, two hooded strangers came to the Abbey and started asking questions. That’s when Will entered the world of dangerous Old Magic.

I loved this book! And the only reason why I did not give it 5 stars, was because it had a very open ending.

This book, I feel is very underrated. I haven’t met anyone of my friends who has read this yet, and so I wanted to rave about it. I really enjoyed reading this when I was younger. I never thought of getting into a fantastical, medieval, dark fiction middle grade book.

Looking at the title itself made me not want to pick up the book at first, (yes, I’m a scaredy cat when it comes to reading. It just feels so real in books!) but I’m surely glad I did. The author created this world that was so familiar and added a hidden secret to it. You could really feel being with Will the whole time. There was the time that Will went into the forest and I felt on edge like I was going there too.

The only question I kept asking was what really happened at that time Will was orphaned. What happened there? What did it look like? I wish I knew more about Will, his story, his family. I came upon rereading it because I forgot how the story went and also forgot that it gave a very open end. Gladly enough, I discovered that Pat Walsh wrote a second book; the Crowfield Demon. Really can’t wait to read that!

I would highly recommend this book to anyone at any age. It’s a great first step into the world of fantasy and magic. And Pat Walsh does make you feel so immersed into the world she built.

Also there is a book map for all those who love that! And I just discovered dictionary pages of some words related to the monastery practices at the back of the book.
